Recognizing an unmet need for providing specialized services to children whose needs couldn’t be met in typical care environments, Theresa Fitzgerald an educator and Christine Johnson a nurse co-founded Children’s Respite Care Center (CRCC) in 1990.
While developing the program, the most important source of information came from parents of children with special needs; they desired a comprehensive program that addressed the cognitive, therapeutic, and social needs of their children. Licensed as both a Children’s Day Health Service and a specialized childcare center, CRCC provides programs and services to children and adolescents who have medical, developmental and behavior challenges.
CRCC opened the doors of its first facility in a Southwest Omaha location. Demand for services soon exceeded this location’s capacity and a second facility was opened in Northwest Omaha in 1995. We were prompted to open a third site in 1999 as a result of an increase in demand for care of older children and adolescents. In 2004 we closed our original Northwest location and opened a newly constructed, state-of-the-art, 17,000 square foot facility.
In 2006, our two sites in Southwest Omaha were consolidated into one larger location. Having outgrown this site, in April 2014 our newly constructed Southwest location opened in the heart of Millard. The center is custom built to meet CRCC’s needs allowing for much needed expansion of our Day and Outpatient Behavioral Health Program, increasing classroom capacity and making available private therapy rooms for our current clients and families as well as space to serve clients community wide. It is home to our CRCC Therapy Center as well. Providing developmental and rehab therapy complete with a advanced therapy gym and individualized treatment rooms.
Children’s Respite Care Center is the only facility of its kind in Nebraska that provides the scope of programs designed specifically for children with special needs and their families. Our staff of nurses, teachers and therapists provides quality, coordinated care to help each child achieve their maximum potential in two Omaha locations.
Our philosophy is to care for children in such a way that enables growth, and first recognizes and preserves the dignity of each.
